Discussion Can someone give me a crash course on great works of art, writing, music, etc? I've played civ for a decent amount of time to have a pretty fair knowledge of the basics of civ but the works I mentioned I haven't paid attention to at all.
How do I obtain these? And any other useful info is appreciated. Great works are made through Great artists, musicians and writers. These are all obtained in the same manner as Great engineers, merchants and scientists - ie you get points towards these great people from assigning specialists to their corresponding buildings. To spawn Great artists, musicians and writers you have to have specialists assigned to the Artist's guild, Musician's guild and Writer's Guild respectively.
Sorry if you knew all that but may as well cover it too. So once you have artists, musicians, writers you can either choose to use them to gain culture writers , gain a fixed amount of tourism musicians or start a golden age artists. Alternatively, you can choose to create a great work corresponding to the great person type.
If you use a great artists and use them to make a great work of art, this can then be placed into a great work or art slot which are in some buildings and wonders. For example the Parthenon has a single slot for a great work of art although a great work of art does come pre-built with the parthenon anyway.
Then you have the theming bonuses for certain buildings and wonders. Take a museum for example. They have two slots for either great works or art or artifacts which very annoyingly have the same icon as great works of art.
So if you take two great works of art both from either your civ AND the same era OR two great works of art from civilisations other than your own AND from the same era you will get a bonus of both culture and tourism. Different wonders require different combos of era and civ in order to get that theming bonus and you can trade great works with other civs in order to try and get what you need to make the theming bonuses happen.
So the pros are that you get increased culture and tourism which are obviously useful in lots of ways, especially for making sure that your ideology is protected from other civ's ideology, thereby not producing unhappiness in you civ. The cons are that you have to balance your choices of how you use great people according to your tactics and preffered victory type.
Ie do you use great artists for a quick golden age or do you use the great work to generate tourism and culture in the long run. For some reason, I don't have the option to create new works of art with my great artists. Right now, I have 6 empty slots specifically for art but I can't use them. Showing 1 - 15 of 27 comments. The only other thing I can think of that hasn't been mentioned so far is that the artist isn't next to one of your cities. Aside from that, I don't know.
