He enjoyed music, sports, and Shenacadie where he loved to relax, and enjoy the beauty of nature. It was here that he would demonstrate his competitive side not only in horse shoes, but he continues to hold the title of the "earliest" to brave the chilly Bras d'Or Lakes before the summer sun had a chance to warm the waters.

In meeting many of life's challenges, Tony will always be remembered for his quiet resolve, his courage, and his strength. With his sense of humour, he would often take claim as "having the strongest arm in the world" often proving this by performing his one arm push-ups. John was a very community-minded person. He was very active in the St. Joseph's Syrian and Lebanese Benevolent Society as past president and board member.

He served on the board of directors for the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League, supported Kid Sport, attended numerous charity events and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Junior touched people from all walks of life. He always had time to talk to others and will be remembered for his kindness, hard work, talent and respect for others.

John 'Junior' Hanna of Sydney lost a long and courageous battle with cancer Sunday morning and with his family by his side passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Hanna has long been considered one of the greatest hockey players to call Nova Scotia home. He was a member of a small fraternity from this province to play in the NHL during the Original Six days. He never even put on skates until he was 13 and didn'tgo away until he was For him to just jump on atrain and go away to Montrealand try out for a hockey team and eventually end up playing in the BigSix was quitea thing.

He also played with the MontrealCanadiens and PhiladelphiaFlyers during a pro playing career that spanned 17 seasons. Once you're a hockey person, you're always a hockeyperson. He wanted to get out and enjoy one more hockey game. When he returned home to Cape Breton, Hanna became very active in thelocal hockey community atboth the coaching and administrative levels.

Hanna loved totalk hockey "He had a big influence on me as a coach," said Paul Coleman, a close friend of Hanna's oldest son, John Jr. He said the biggest thing is to be accountable and walk in the rink through the front door and out through the front door.
